Afghan Women's Beauty Salons have been Banned by the Taliban.

In the newest effort to further exclude women from public life, the ministry repeats a recent directive for salons to close within a month.

According to a government official, the Taliban has recently restricted the rights and freedoms of women and girls in Afghanistan by outlawing women's beauty salons.

The government decision, which was announced on Tuesday, follows decrees banning women from most types of work, public places, and education since the Taliban took control in August 2021 as US and NATO soldiers withdrew.

The ban's specifics were not provided by Mohammad Sidik Akif Mahajar, a spokesman for the Taliban-run Virtue and Vice Ministry. He just reaffirmed what was said in a letter that was going around on social media.

The letter from the ministry, dated June 24, claims to be a verbal directive from Haibatullah Akhunzada, the top commander.

The prohibition applies to all provinces and the capital city of Kabul, and it provides parlors across the nation a month to close their doors. They must close after that time and give a report on their closure.
There are no justifications for the prohibition in the letter. It occurs only days after Akhunzada asserted that his administration had taken the required actions to improve the lives of Afghan women.

The Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice's spokesperson, Mohammad Sadeq Akif Muhajir, declined to provide an explanation for the new decree.

"Once they are closed, then we will share the reason with the media," he told the AFP news agency.

According to Muhajir, the companies have been granted time to wind down their operations so they may use up their inventory without suffering damages. The directive was "based on verbal instruction from the supreme leader," according to a document that AFP saw.

Taliban policies have been severe, despite earlier assurances that they would be more moderate than when they previously held power in the 1990s. It has restricted media freedoms and prohibited women from using public facilities like gyms and parks.

Additionally, hundreds of women have lost their employment in the government or are receiving pay to stay at home, and the majority of women are prohibited from working for the UN or NGOs.

The actions have aggravated a humanitarian catastrophe and sparked a heated international backlash, further isolating the nation at a time when its economy is collapsing.
